Patent and a wholecut are the two most formal decisions a shoe can make, and the 5908 makes both at once.
The upper is black italian patent leather, cut from a single piece with closed channel lacing and almost no stitching to interrupt it. Tan calf leather lines the inside and the sole is red leather. It is built on the Zurigo last, rounded at the toe for the traditional English look. Every pair is handmade.
This is often described as the most formal men's shoe available, and the sleek design and limited stitching are the reason. In patent it stops being a dress shoe and becomes an evening one. Black tie, black trousers, and the red sole underneath as the only thing that is not.
